Loch Ascog

Background

Loch Ascog WTW is on the Isle of Bute in Western Scotland and has been plagued with algal problems. The algae caused blankets to form across the slow sand filters causing major throughput problems and continuous filter blockages. Filter Clear were brought into to solve the algae problem and maintain the plant throughput.

Loch Ascog WTW consisted of 2 raw water intake wells and 5 slow sand filters. The project was concerned with the upgrading of the works to satisfy the following drinking water (DW) directives:

  • DW 3.2 Manganese
  • DW 3.7 Pesticides/Taste and Odour
  • DW 3.9 Turbidity
  • DW13.1 Aesthetic Quality (Disinfection Control)
